James 3:5 – Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
What have you used your tongue for today? Did you talk about the weather? Complain or gossip a little? Maybe you were just chatting with a friend about your weekend plans or a new outfit you want. All of those things are typical conversations in our everyday life, but do we ever put one of our strongest muscles (the tongue) to good use and encourage someone?
I myself am challeged by this thought today. When was the last time I encouraged someone? When was the last time I said a kind thing to another person or just let them know that I care about them? Far too many times we go an entire day, week, or even month not saying a kind or encouraging word to anyone. Shame on us! We can influence someone so greatly with just a few words, so how are we influencing the people we come into contact with from day to day?
I know that personally, I love to hear encouraging words! I have a dear friend, Linda, who e-mails me almost everyday throughout the work week and tells me she is thinking of me, praying for me, or tells me she hopes I have a great day. Those e-mails literally make my whole day! Think about that, your kind words could completely turn someone’s day around.
I am challening you (and myself) to put your tongue to good use today! Tell someone that you love them, appreciate them, are praying for them, or are simply just thinking of them today. I guarantee you there is at least one person you know who needs that encouragement today.
Below is a verse that encouraged me today. I don’t know who else may need it, but I thought I would share it. 🙂
