I am probably not the only one who has put off college in order to follow her husband around the world during his Military career. A few years ago I put college on hold to move out to Colorado to support my “soon to be husband” while he was at the Air Force Academy. We were planning on getting married the following summer so I packed my bags and moved out to Colorado to be closer to him. I wanted to see for myself what the military was all about and what he was required to do on an every day basis. Being out there really did help me to understand his duties and responsibilities. I also believe it was definitely God’s will for me to move out there. The one draw back that resulted from this was my education being put on hold. Do I regret my decision? Absolutely not, but it is definitely harder for me to finish now.
The military is great about offering financial assistance for college. There are also discounts that are offered to military and their wives at various colleges. My dilemma is not just finances, it is deciding what exactly I want to study. I am interested in many different areas of study, but narrowing down exactly what to pursue has been a challenge. I am currently leaning towards an Associates in Business for now and then that will allow me more time to decide exactly what area of business I want to plan a career in. The moving around and having to switch colleges does not help to say the least.
I am not trying to complain, I believe as a military wife our greatest calling and “job” is to support and help our husbands. We need to be there for them in whatever way possible to help further their career in the military. This being said, I also want a successful career. I will of course focus on being the wife that he needs, but I need to figure out a way to manage my career as well.
I am planning to start Liberty University this fall and take the courses to complete and Associates in Business. Hopefully I am happy in the end with this choice. Wish me luck!
